Oaxaca, Mexico
The view from our front door, Maya makes tortillas, pictures from the teacher strike in the Zocalo.
Good: We really like our new house and neighborhood. It is a little more residential, though still very urban. Each morning we have a nice (to me) 20 minute walk to the meeting spot for caravanning to school-Amigos del Sol. The school used to be in Centro, but after the violence in 2006, they moved to the north part of town. There are still social and financial repercussions from then.
Bad: Rinda did not get the first job she applied for, so she will be staying in Berkeley to put in for more positions. We are doing just fine without her, BUT WE MISS HER!!
Surprising: Yesterday, we learned that one of our Spanish teacher had a badger when he was a kid. He even slept with it sometimes. We were shocked when we translate the word he told us in spanish.

I went to take the group picture at Woolsey on Tuesday, walked into Sheri's house to go put the pictures on her computer, and, whoa, I did a double-take when I saw Rinda! (I had read that she would be in Berkeley, but I hadn't really processed it). A very pleasant surprise anyway!
I hope that the spanish lessons are feeling less overwhelming. I remember Chris telling me it took about a month for things to start to come together for him (he goes to Buenos Aires on Tuesday for a couple of months).
Look forward to seeing you in the summer.
love Sarah
tejon!
Hi there,
I was cleaning my desk -finally- and came across your January letter! Went on to the blog and have spent the last hour or so reliving your trip. What an event! The way you combined all the parts of your lives -from school,to job search,to travel is definitely the meat for a book. Looking forward to seeing you on your return. Rinda, there are lots of jobs out there...take your time to find one you really want. Enjoy! Louise Rosenkrantz
